Change Aspect Ratio and Resolution for CA, OR and WA

• Aspect Ratio is the proportion between the width and height of a TV screen
  
  
• Resolution defines the amount of pixels displayed on the screen
  
  
  • 4K (Available on some TiVos)

  • 720p
    
    
  • 480i (Standard Definition)
    
    
  • i or p refers to the scanning technology
    
    
    • i = Interlaced scanning technology. It scans and refreshes even and odd lines separately, but produces very sharp pictures in general when the image is still or has little motion
      
      
    • p = Progressive scanning technology (newer). Scans and refreshes all lines at the same time. Progressive scanning produces smoother motion with less blurring. It's perfect for high action movies and sports.

Resolution

Aspect Ratio

Change Aspect Ratio:

• 4K 6 Tuners, 6 Tuners , 4K Minis, and Minis on TiVo Experience 4 with Voice
  
  
  • Go to TiVo Home | left arrow to Menu | Settings | Audio & Video Settings | TV Aspect Ratio
    
    
    
  • Select 16:9 Widescreen for a widescreen HD TV or 4:3 Classic Screen for a square, SD TV

 

Aspect Correction Mode:

• 4K 6 Tuners, 6 Tuners , 4K Minis, and Minis on TiVo Experience 4 with Voice
  
  
  • Go to TiVo Home | left arrow to Menu | Settings | Audio & Video Settings | Aspect Correction Mode
    
    
    

  • Panel: adds letterbox bars or side bars to the picture to fill the screen, keeping the program's original aspect ratio
    
    
  • Zoom: enlarges the picture to fit the 16:9 screen without distortion
    
    
  • Full: stretches the picture to fill the entire TV screen without adding letterbox bars or side bars

4:3 HDTV (Square)

1. Power the cable box off but leave the TV on (press the CBL power button on the remote)
   
   
2. Press Menu (on the converter or remote) within 3 seconds. The user settings screen will appear
   
   
3. Using ?, ? keys, change TV Type to:
   
   
   • 4:3 Letter Box - 16:9 broadcasts fill the screen in its Original Aspect Ratio with black bars on the top and bottom
     
     
   • 4:3 Pan and Scan - 16:9 broadcasts will be cropped but fill up the entire screen

    

4. Press the  CBL power button  twice to get back to live TV and test the picture

 

16:9 HDTV (Widescreen)

1. Power the cable box off but leave the TV on (press the CBL power button on the remote)
   
   
2. Press Menu (on the converter or remote) within 3 seconds. The user settings screen will appear
   
   
3. Using ?, ? keys, change TV Type to 16:9
   
   
4. Scroll down to HDMI/YPbPr OUTPUT  (or DVI/YPbPr OUTPUT depending on model)
   
   
5. Using ?, ? keys, change setting to the highest resolution your HDTV is capable of (example: 1080i)
   
   
6. Scroll down to 4:3 Override
   
   
7. This setting will display a 4:3 image the way you want to fit on a 16:9 screen
   
   
8. Set to STRETCH. If set to anything else, you will get left and right borders on a 4:3 picture

9. Press the  CBL power button  twice to get back to live TV and test the picture

Passport (Scientific Atlanta, Cisco Boxes)

4:3 HDTV (Square)

1. On the remote, press Menu twice for the Settings Menu
   
   
2. Scroll to and select Audio/Video, then Video Output Format
   
   
3. Choose 480p Std and arrow right to select Zoom or Letterbox, then press A to confirm changes
   
   
   • Zoom: 4:3 Standard programs display normally; 16:9 HD programs are cropped to fill the screen
     
     
   • Letterbox: 4:3 Standard programs display borders on all sides to maintain the image; 16:9 HD programs display borders on top and bottom
     
     
4. Press A again to accept the change; if the display doesn't change after 15 seconds, the selected output is not supported by the customer's TV
   
   
5. You can also change the color of the left and right borders

 

16:9 HDTV (Widescreen)

1. On the remote, press Menu twice for the Settings Menu
   
   
2. Scroll to and select Audio/Video, then Video Output Format
   
   
3. Choose 1080i Wide and arrow right to select Preserve, Stretch or Sidebar, then press A to confirm changes
   
   
   • Preserve 4:3 Pic - 480i / 480p: 4:3 Standard programs display with borders on the left and right side
     
     
   • Stretch 4:3 Pic: widens 4:3 Standard programs to fit the a 16:9 screen
     
     
   • Sidebar 4:3 Pic: zooms in on 4:3 Standard programs to crop the top and bottom

4. Press A again to accept the change; if the display doesn't change after 15 seconds, the selected output is not supported by the customer's TV

HD-DTA

1. Press Menu button on the remote
   
   
2. Select Settings
   

   If hooked up to TV with HDMI

   1. Select HDMI Setup
      
      
   2. Select TV Aspect Ratio
      
      
   3. Choose from the following aspect ratios:
      
      
      • Auto (recommended)
        
        
      • 4:3 (Standard)
        
        
      • 16:9 (Wide Screen)
        
        
   4. Select Apply
      
      
   5. Select TV Output Resolution:
      
      
      • Auto (recommended)
        
        
      • 1080i
        
        
      • 720p
        
        
      • 480p
        
        
   6. Select Apply
    

   If hooked up to TV with standard coaxial cable

   1. Select SD Setup

      4:3 TVs

      1. Aspect Ratio - set to 4:3 
         
         
      2. Set how you want your 16:9 programming  to look on your 4:3 TV 
         
         
         • Just Scale - 16:9 image will fit completely on screen, but be vertically stretched 
           
           
         • Box - When watching content formatted for a widescreen TV (16:9), you see black bars at the top and bottom of the image
           
           
           • Unfortunately, when watching content formatted for TV (4:3) on a widescreen TV,  black bars on the left and right of the images will show with the top and bottom ones
             
             
             • This is known as a windowbox or postage stamp
               
               
         • Pan and Scan - Only the action area is shown, determined by the broadcaster
           
           
      3. Select Apply
       

      16:9 TVs

      1. Aspect Ratio - set to 16:9  
         
         
      2. Set how you want your 4:3 programming  to look on your 16:9 TV 
         
         
         • Just Scale - 4:3 image will fit completely on screen; horizontally stretched 
           
           
         • Box - 4:3 image will have black bars on the left and right of the image
           
           
         • Pan and Scan - not used with 16:9 TV
           
           
      3. Select Apply
